An air fryer is worth it in Pakistan if you often make fries, nuggets, samosas, tikka or reheated pakoras. It uses a spoon of oil instead of a karahi full, and a 20-minute cook at 1,500 watts uses about half a unit of electricity. A 5 to 5.5 litre model suits most families of three to four.

Key takeaways

  • Air frying cuts oil use sharply, which is the main health gain over deep frying.
  • Acrylamide forms in any high-heat cooking of starchy food. Cook to golden, not dark brown, as the UK Food Standards Agency advises.
  • An estimated 0.4 to 0.6 unit per 20-minute cook, so roughly Rs 14 to Rs 20 at the 201 to 300 slab before taxes.
  • 2 to 3 litres for one or two people, 4 to 5.5 litres for three or four, 6 litres or more for five or six.

Is an air fryer worth it in Pakistan?

For most households, yes, if you would actually use it three or four times a week. An air fryer is a small, powerful fan oven. It blows very hot air around the food, so the outside crisps while the inside cooks, with little or no oil.

It is good at the things Pakistani families fry most: frozen fries and nuggets, chicken wings and tikka pieces, fish, kebabs, and reheating samosas or pakoras so they come out crisp instead of soggy. Winter snack season is when it earns its counter space.

It is not a full replacement for the karahi. Wet batters, like pakora batter straight from the bowl, drip through the basket. You cannot make a salan in it, and big batches for guests take several rounds. Think of it as a second cooker for snacks and quick meals, not the main stove.

Is an air fryer healthy or bad for health?

The clearest benefit is oil. Deep frying soaks food in oil, while an air fryer needs a light brush or spray, or none for frozen items that are pre-fried. Less oil means fewer calories from fat per plate. That alone makes air-fried fries a better habit than deep-fried ones.

Does an air fryer cause cancer?

There is no evidence that the appliance itself causes cancer. The concern people search for is acrylamide, a chemical that forms naturally when starchy foods such as potatoes and bread are cooked above about 120 °C. It forms in frying, baking, roasting, grilling and toasting, not only in air fryers. The UK Food Standards Agency says acrylamide causes cancer in animals and could pose a risk to humans, and advises cutting down as a precaution (Food Standards Agency).

The research on air fryers specifically is mixed. A 2015 study in the Journal of Food Science found air-fried potatoes formed far less acrylamide than deep-fried ones (Sansano et al., 2015). A 2024 study in Frontiers in Nutrition found no significant difference between air, deep and oven frying, though soaking potatoes for 10 minutes before cooking lowered acrylamide (Navruz-Varlı and Mortaş, 2024). The honest summary: an air fryer is not magically acrylamide-free, but it is no worse than other high-heat methods and uses much less oil.

Tip

Follow the FSA's simple rule and cook chips and potatoes to a golden yellow colour, not dark brown. Soaking cut potatoes in water for 10 minutes, then drying them, also helps them crisp evenly.

Which air fryer size is right for your family?

Air fryer capacity is quoted in litres of basket volume. You only get good results with a single layer of food and some space for air, so a basket that looks big in the shop fills fast. There is no official standard, but this rule of thumb, used widely by sellers, is a reasonable starting point.

HouseholdBasket sizeRoughly fits
1 to 2 people2 to 3 litresOne portion of fries or a few pieces of chicken
3 to 4 people4 to 5.5 litresA family plate of fries or a tray of chicken pieces
5 to 6 people6 litres and up, or a dual basketA small whole chicken, or a side and a main together
Large joint family7 litres and up, or an oven-style air fryerBigger batches in fewer rounds

For a family of four, a 5.5 litre basket such as the Dawlance DWAF-6321 L (listed with a 5.5 litre pot) is the common choice. For five or six, look at 6.5 litres and up. The Kenwood HFP-80 is listed at 7 litres and 1,800 W, which helps with whole chicken and guests.

How many units does an air fryer use?

Most air fryers in Pakistan are rated between 1,300 and 1,800 watts. The Philips NA-120 is listed at 1,300 W, the Xiaomi 5.5 litre at 1,600 W and the Kenwood HFP-80 at 1,800 W. One unit is 1,000 watts used for one hour, so the sum is simple: kilowatts x hours.

The heating element also switches off and on once it reaches temperature, so real use is often a little lower than these figures. Treat them as upper estimates.

Air fryer powerUnits for a 20-minute cookCost at Rs 33.10 per unit (estimate)Cost of daily use for 30 days (estimate)
1,300 W1.3 x 20/60 = 0.430.43 x 33.10 = Rs 1413 units, about Rs 430
1,500 W1.5 x 20/60 = 0.500.50 x 33.10 = Rs 1715 units, about Rs 497
1,800 W1.8 x 20/60 = 0.600.60 x 33.10 = Rs 2018 units, about Rs 596

Rs 33.10 is the 201 to 300 unit slab for non-protected homes under NEPRA's 2026 tariff, which MEPCO applies in Multan, as of October 2026. Tax and adjustments add more on top. If your home is protected and close to the 200-unit limit, 13 to 18 extra units a month can be enough to push you over, which costs you protected rates for six months.

Is it cheaper than using gas or the oven?

Compared with heating a full electric oven for a small batch, an air fryer usually wins because it heats a small space and cooks faster. Compared with a gas stove on protected gas, electricity is more expensive per hour. The bigger saving is oil: you use a spoonful instead of filling a karahi, and you are not throwing used oil away.

Air fryer vs microwave: do you need both?

They do different jobs. A microwave heats food from the inside using microwaves, so it is fastest for reheating rice, salan and milk, but it leaves fried food soft. An air fryer crisps, so it is better for anything that should crunch. Many families keep both.

If counter space is tight, a microwave with a built-in air fry mode covers both, though it is usually slower to crisp than a dedicated basket air fryer. See our guide to microwave types for that comparison, and the Dawlance DW-530-AF (Air Fryer) as an example of a combination model.

Frequently asked questions

Is air fryer healthy?

It is healthier than deep frying because it uses much less oil, which cuts the fat and calories in fried snacks. It does not remove every concern: starchy foods cooked at high heat form acrylamide whatever the method. The UK Food Standards Agency advises cooking potatoes and bread to golden yellow rather than dark brown to keep it low.

Does an air fryer cause cancer?

No evidence shows the appliance itself causes cancer. The worry is acrylamide, which forms in starchy foods cooked above about 120 °C in any oven, pan or fryer. Studies disagree on whether air frying makes more or less of it than deep frying. Cooking to golden, not dark, and soaking cut potatoes first both help.

Which air fryer size is best for a family of 4?

A basket of 4 to 5.5 litres suits most families of four. It cooks a family plate of fries or a tray of chicken pieces in one round. If you often cook for guests or want to roast a small whole chicken, go for 6.5 litres or more, or a dual-basket model so a main and a side cook together.

Air fryer kitni bijli khata hai?

A 1,500 watt air fryer uses about 0.5 unit for a 20-minute cook (1.5 kW x 20/60 hours). At Rs 33.10 a unit, the 201 to 300 slab rate as of October 2026, that is about Rs 17 before taxes. Cooking once a day for a month adds roughly 15 units to your bill.

Can I make pakoras and samosas in an air fryer?

Ready-made or frozen samosas and leftover pakoras crisp up very well, often better than in a microwave. Fresh pakoras from a runny batter do not work well, because the batter drips through the basket before it sets. Brush samosas lightly with oil and turn them halfway for an even colour.
