Solo, grill or convection: which microwave should I buy?
A solo microwave reheats and defrosts. A grill model adds a heating element so food can brown and crisp. A convection model adds a fan and element, so it can bake and roast like a small oven (Toshiba).

What size microwave do I need?
A 20 litre oven handles reheating plates and bowls for a small family. If you want to bake or roast, choose a larger convection model, such as the Haier HMW-30AFS, a 30 litre convection oven with a built-in air fryer. Dawlance's DW-530-AF and DW-550-AF also combine microwave and air fryer. Measure your counter and leave space around the vents.
How much electricity does a microwave use?
Most 20 litre solo models list about 700 W of microwave power, such as the Dawlance DW-210 S. Power drawn from the socket is higher than that output figure. Convection and air frying draw much more: the Dawlance DW-530-AF lists 2,100 W for convection.
Estimate: reheating for 5 minutes at about 1 kW uses 1 x 5/60 = about 0.08 unit, under Rs 3 at Rs 33.10 a unit (201 to 300 slab, as of October 2026, NEPRA tariff decision, February 2026). Baking a cake on convection for 40 minutes at 2.1 kW uses about 1.4 units, roughly Rs 46.
Simple use tips
- Use microwave-safe glass or ceramic in microwave mode, and keep metal out unless the manual allows its racks for grill or convection.
- Leave the vent gap the manual asks for.
- Wipe splashes after use so they do not bake on.

Grill or convection microwave: which is better?
A grill microwave reheats and browns, which suits tikka, toast and crisp tops. A convection microwave adds a fan and heating element, so it can also bake cakes and roast chicken. If you only reheat and occasionally grill, a grill model is enough. If you want to bake at home, go for convection.
Which microwave is best for baking a cake?
You need a convection microwave, because solo and grill models cannot bake properly. In our range, convection options include the Haier HMW-30AFS (30 litres, with air fryer), the Dawlance DW-530-AF and DW-550-AF, and the Kenwood MMWP-29.000BK. A larger cavity gives more room for a cake tin.
Can a microwave replace an air fryer?
A convection microwave with an air fryer function can do much of the same work, and saves counter space if you want one appliance. A separate air fryer heats up faster for small batches of fries or wings. If you also want to reheat and bake, a combination model such as the Haier HMW-30AFS covers more jobs.
